Red Raiders Host Briar Cliff

Game Time...Northwestern College goes for its third straight win as they play host to 24th-ranked Briar Cliff Wednesday night, Dec. 10. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8pm. Northwestern has won two straight and is 2-2 in the GPAC, 7-3 overall. Briar Cliff is also on a two-game win streak and is 4-1 in conference play, 8-3 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 58-43 and is 6-4 over the last 10 match-ups against Briar Cliff. 

Scouting Briar Cliff...The Chargers have won two straight games and are off to an 8-3 start to the season, 4-1 in conference play. They moved up to 24th in this week's NAIA D-II coaches' poll, a week after earning votes in the Dec. 2 rating. After wins over Doane and Concordia in league play, Briar Cliff earned a pair of home wins over Dordt and Hastings last week. The Chargers' lone conference loss is to fourth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan on the road, 84-76, on Nov. 25. They also have a win over 21st William Penn.

Nic Nelson is in his fourth season as the Chargers' head coach after spending four years prior as the top assistant under former head coach Todd Barry. Nelson led BCU to the national quarterfinals in his first season (2011-12) and guided his team to a seventh place finish in the GPAC last year with a 9-11 record, 16-15 overall. Picked fourth in the GPAC preseason poll, Nelson returns all five starters and 11 players from last year's team.

Briar Cliff averages 76 points per game and is is shooting 45% from the field, 40% from beyond the arc. They lead the GPAC in scoring defense, giving up 67 points per game, and teams are shooting just 31% from the three-point arc against BCU.

The Chargers feature a balanced scoring attack with seven players averaging over six points, led by Clay Harreld at 12.6 points per game. An all-conference pick last year, Harreld has made 30 three-pointers and is shooting an impressive 50% from beyond the arc. Sophomore Shane Graves scores 11 points per game, shooting 55% from the field, and has dished out 26 assists. Zach Otting, also an all-conference pick last year, scores 10.5 points per game, and Austin Lefler has made 21 three-pointers, averaging nine points per game.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders evened their conference record to 2-2 with wins over Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan last week. Northwestern is 7-3 overall, owning wins over ranked teams, Cardinal Stritch and Dakota State. 

Northwestern is one of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA, averaging 91 points per game, and shooting an even 50% from the field. They lead the GPAC in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 41% from the floor, and are the top rebounding team in the league at +12.

Jordan Baker leads a balanced Red Raider offense, averaging 15 points and a GPAC-leading 10 rebounds per game. Baker has scored in double figures in every game this season and has three double-doubles. Colton Kooima scores 14.6 points per game and is one of the top three-point shooters in the GPAC, putting in 32 (3.2 per game) and shooting 46% from beyond the arc. Nathan Wedel averages 12.8 points per game and is second on the team with 5.2 rebounds. The freshman is shooting better than 60% from the field. Junior Taylor Francis scores 11.3 points per game and is second on the team with 24 assists.
