All-Time...The Red Raiders hold a 30-16 advantage in the all-time series and is 6-4 over the last 10 games against Hastings. Last year, the Broncos swept the season series against NWC.
Scouting Hastings...The Broncos are 2-3 this season but have won two of their last three games heading into Saturday's match-up against Northwestern. They opened the year with consecutive losses to Bellevue and York but then defeated Mount Marty (80-59) in its conference opener. A close loss to Peru State followed but Hastings then knocked off #20 Tabor 71-60 on a neutral floor.
Bill Gavers begins his second season as the Broncos' head coach, taking over the team last year from long-time coach Lance Creech. Gavers came to Hastings after a long, successful stint as a high school coach, leading his teams to 12 state tournaments in his 22 years on the sideline. He returns one full time starter and six players off a 2013-14 squad that finished fourth in the league with a 14-6 record, 21-10 overall. They were picked seventh in the GPAC preseason poll.
Hastings scores 75 points per game and is shooting 46% from the field, 34% from beyond the arc. They hold a +5 advantage on the boards, pulling down 10 offensive rebounds per game.
Zach Lenagh leads the Broncos in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The senior is shooting 67% from the field, second best in the conference. Senior Tobin Reinwald scores 13.7 points per game in returning after an injury-shortened 2013-14 season. Both Brandon Krause and Zach Clemens put in 10 points per game and have combined for nine three-pointers this season.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are off to a 4-1 start to the season and have a three-game win streak heading into Saturday. Northwestern has two wins over ranked teams, defeating #2 Cardinal Stritch and (RV) Dakota State in its last two games. They were picked to finish sixth in the GPAC preseason coaches' poll.
Northwestern ranks ninth in the NAIA in scoring, averaging a GPAC-best 92 points per game. They are third in the GPAC in field goal percentage (49%) and 39% from beyond the arc. The Red Raiders own an impressive +15 advantage on the glass, ranking 13th in the nation with 81 offensive rebounds.
Colton Kooima is among four NWC players scoring in double figures, averaging a team-best 17 points per game. The freshman is shooting 50% from beyond the arc, making 20 three-pointers this season. Jordan Baker scores 15.4 points and leads the team in rebounding (10.8). The sophomore has two double-doubles this season. Nathan Wedel scores 15 points per game, shooting 61% from the field. All three players have scored in double figures in every game this season. Taylor Francis averages 10 points per game and has six three-pointers.
