Red Raiders At Dakota State On Tuesday

Game Time...Northwestern College goes for its third straight win as they travel to Madison, S.D. to play Dakota State in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm. The Red Raiders are 3-1 this season and are on a two-game win streak, defeating Valley City State and #2 Cardinal Stritch last weekend. Dakota State earned votes in the NAIA D-II preseason poll and is 1-3 on the year. All-Time...Northwestern is 15-3 all-time against Dakota State in a rivalry that began in 1970-71. The teams split their two meetings last season, each winning on its home court.  

Scouting Dakota State...Since defeating Waldorf 86-70 in its season opener, Dakota State has lost three straight games, falling to Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt and Grand View. The Trojans earned votes in the NAIA D-II preseason coaches' poll.

Gary Garner is in his sixth season as the Dakota State head coach and returns two starters and four players off a 2013-14 team that finished second in the North Star Athletic Conference with a 6-2 record, 15-15 overall. They lost to the University of Jamestown in th conference championship last season but went 8-4 over their last 12 games. Prior to coming to DSU, Garner served as head coach at Drake and Southwest Missouri State. Garner has led the Trjojans to two NAIA D-II national tournaments. 

Dakota State averages 75 points per game while shooting 45% from the field and 38% from the three-point line. They have been outrebounded by a +7 margin in four games this season.

Bryant Allen, a transfer from Illinois State, leads the team in scoring at 22 points per game, shooting 43% from the field. He also leads the team with 11 assists and is second on the team with eight three-pointers. Freshman Brendon Boomsma scores 14.5 points per game and has a team-best 10 three-pointers, shooting 59% from beyond the arc. Derek Meger, a transfer from Vermillion Community College, puts in 11.5 points per game and returning starter, Miguel Sansavour, chips in 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Sansavour earned second team all-conference honors and was named the defensive player of the year in 2013-14. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are off to a 3-1 start this season, earning wins over Crossroads, Valley City State and #2 Cardinal Stritch last time out. Their win on Saturday over the second-ranked Wolves was the first win over team ranked in the top five since 2008. 

Northwestern is one of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA, averaging 94 points per game. They are shooting 48% from the field and 36% (32-for-89) from beyond the arc. The Red Raiders are also one of the top rebounding team in the NAIA, holding a +16 advantage on the boards.

Freshman Colton Kooima is among four NWC players averaging in double figures, scoring a team-best 17.5 points per game. Kooima has made 15 three-pointers on the year, shooting 44% from beyond the arc. Another freshman, Nathan Wedel, scores 14.8 points per game and also pulls down six rebounds per contest. Jordan Baker averages a double-double at 13.8 points and 10 rebounds per game. All three players have scored in double figures in all three games. Taylor Francis scores 10 points per game and Isaiah Taylor comes off the bench to add nine points per game.
