Red Raiders Face Road Test In Yankton

Game Time...Northwestern College begins a two game road trip Wednesday night as they play Mount Marty in a GPAC men's basketball match-up. Tip-off in Yankton, S.D. is set for 8pm. The Red Raiders are in seventh place in the GPAC with a 5-7 league record, 12-10 overall. Mount Marty is in last place in the GPAC with a 1-12 record, 3-18 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 46-16 in a rivalry that began in 1977. The Red Raiders are 9-1 over the last 10 match-ups, splitting last year's meetings and earning a home win against MMC earlier this year. 

Last Time vs Mount Marty...A balanced scoring effort led Northwestern past Mount Marty 87-64 in a GPAC match-up played on Dec. 4 in the bultman Center. 

Six Red Raider players scored in double figures, led by Joey Habtemariam, Tyler Goldston and Jordan Baker with 13 points each. Justin Van Kalsbeek added 12 points, followed by Zack Leeper (11) and Bryce Moss (10). 

Northwestern began the game on a 19-9 run and led from 4-10 points for the remainder of the half, holding a 43-36 advantage at the break. 

The Red Raiders pushed the lead to double digits (55-43) after a jumper by Van Kalsbeek and gradually pulled away from there to the 23-point win. 

Northwestern shot 51% for the game but just 2-for-13 (15%) from beyond the arc. They held a 42-28 advantage on the glass, including 16 on the offensive side. 

Mount Marty shot 36% from the field, led by Bud Smith and Alex Irvine with 14 points each. 

Scouting Mount Marty...The Lancers have dropped four straight games to fall to 1-12 in the GPAC, 3-18 overall. They are currently 11th in the GPAC with its lone win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Jan. 4. Since then, they have lost to Dakota Wesleyan, Midland, Dordt and Doane. 

Andrew Baker is in his first season as the Lancers head coach, spending two years as the top assistant under former head coach Jim Thorson who stepped down at the end of last year. He inherits just four players off a 2012-13 team that finished 10th in the GPAC with a 4-16 record, 8-21 overall. 

Mount Marty scores 63 points per game and ranks last in field goal percentage (41%) and three-point percentage (29%). They are giving up 77 points per game. 

Tyler Payer is the team's leading scorer, averaging 14 points per game. The junior leads the team with 43 three-pointers. Bud Smith scores 13.2 points per game and pulls down 3.7 boards per contest. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are currently in seventh place in the GPAC with a 5-7 mark, one game in back of Dakota Wesleyan and a game up on Nebraska Wesleyan. Northwestern is 4-2 since the break and owns a 12-10 overall record. 

Northwestern ranks in the middle of the pack in scoring, averaging 75 points per game. They are shooting 45% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc. Defensively, Northwestern is giving up 75 points per game and is second in field goal percentage, limiting teams to just 44% from the field. 

Zack Leeper leads the Red Raiders in scoring, pouring in 18 points per game. The senior is the team's top three-point shooter at 38%, making 40 this season. Leeper also averages 5.5 boards per game. Jordan Baker scores 12.7 points per game while ranking third in the GPAC in field goal percentage (57%). 

Up Next...Northwestern heads to Fremont, Neb. to play seventh-ranked Midland on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4pm.
