Northwestern Plays Host to NWU

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Nebraska Wesleyan in a GPAC men's basketball match-up on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tipoff at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 4pm. The Red Raiders have lost two straight to fall into a tie for seventh place at 4-7, 11-10 overall. Nebraska Wesleyan is also tied for seventh place in the GPAC with a 4-7 record, 9-7 overall. All-Time...Northwestern owns a slim 18-17 lead in the all-time series against NWU but has had the upper hand of late, winning the last six games. They are 14-1 over the last 15 match-ups with the only loss during the 2009-10 season. 

Last Time vs Nebraska Wesleyan...Zack Leeper hit a go-ahead jumper with 33 seconds left to play in leading Northwestern to a 78-76 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Dec. 7 in Lincoln, Neb. 

The Red Raiders trailed by four (76-72) but scored the final six points of the game to earn the win. Joey Habtemariam knocked down a three-pointer, followed by a basket by Leeper and then Habtemariam made 1-of-2 free throws over the final 1:30. 

Leeper led Northwestern with 25 points, reaching the 1,000-point milestone early in the second half. Habtemariam added 18 points while Jordan Baker (16) and Levi Ettleman (11) were also in double figures. Northwestern shot 51% for the game and held a slim 36-33 edge on the glass. 

Nebraska Wesleyan was led by Trevor Johnson with a game-high 30 points, making 12-of-14 field goal attempts. Eric Jackson added 12 points for the Wolves, who struggled from the perimeter, making 2-of-14 three-point attempts. 

Nebraska Wesleyan News and Notes...The Prairie Wolves come into Saturday tied with Northwestern for seventh place in the GPAC with a 4-7 record, 9-7 overall. They have lost four of their last five games since the break, earning their lone win over Doane last week. NWU has lost to Mount Marty, Hastings, Dordt and Dakota Wesleyan during that stretch. 

Cam Schuknecht is in his eighth season as the Wolves' head coach and returns all five starters and nine players off last year's team that won the most games since the 2007-08 season, finishing with a 13-12 record. They were ninth in the GPAC at 8-12. 

NWU is scoring 79 points per game this season, shooting a GPAC-leading 51% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Wolves are giving up 69 points per game and are ninth in the league in rebounding (+1). 

Trevor Johnson is one of three NWU players scoring in double figures, averaging 19 points per game while leading the NAIA in field goal percentage (71%). An honorable mention all-GPAC pick last year, Johnson leads the team in rebounding (6.4). Eric Jackson, a second team all-conference selection in 2013, scores 12.5 points per game. He leads the team with 33 three-pointers. Jonah Bradley scores 10.8 points per game and is shooting 42% from beyond the arc (28 three-pointers). 

Northwestern News and Notes...Like NWU, Northwestern owns a 4-7 league record heading into Saturday's match-up and is tied with the Wolves for seventh place. They have lost two straight since earning three straight wins to start the 2014 calender year, falling to ranked teams; Dordt and Morningside. 

Northwestern ranks in the middle of the pack in scoring offense (75ppg), field goal percentage (44%) and three-point percentage (33%-5.9/game). They are the fourth best rebounding team in the GPAC (+4) and rank second in field goal percentage defense (43%). Northwestern is giving up 76 points per game. 

Zack Leeper is the Red Raiders' top scorer, averaging 18 points per game. The senior has scored in double figures in every game this year and leads the team with 38 three-pointers. Leeper, a two-time all-conference pick, pulls down 5.4 rebounds per game. Jordan Baker is having an outstanding freshman year, averaging 13 points and 6..6 rebounds per game. Baker is shooting nearly 60% from the field and has four double-doubles this season. Joey Habtemariam (9) and Levi Ettleman (6.1) are the other top scorers for NWC.
