Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to 15th-ranked Midland on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 4pm. The Red Raiders have won three straight and are 2-3 in the GPAC, 8-6 overall. All-Time...Northwestern is 63-22 all-time against Midland in a rivalry that began during the 1960-61 season. Northwestern has won 10 straight against the Warriors, a streak that began in the 2005-06 season.
Midland News and Notes...Picked first in the GPAC preseason poll, Midland is currently third in the conference with a 5-1 record with its lone setback to Dordt on Nov. 16. They have wins over Morningside, Mount Marty, Doane, Nebraska Wesleyan and Dakota Wesleyan. Midland has won seven straight games since its lone loss on the 16th and is 10-1 on the season, ranked 15th in the current NAIA coaches' poll.
Todd Eisner is in his third season as the head coach at Midland and returns three starters and nine players off a 2012-13 team that set the record for wins in a season, finishing 21-13 overall. Eisner also guided the Warriors to its first ever quarterfinals at the NAIA D-II championship, falling to William Penn on a last second shot. He is the only coach at the D-II level to lead three different teams to the national quarterfinals (Bellevue, Viterbo). Midland finished third in the GPAC with a 12-8 record last year.
Midland averages 76 points per game while shooting nearly 50% from the field. They average 7.2 three-pointers per game and rank among the NAIA's best defensively, giving up 66 points per game.
Senior guard and two year starter Ben Imig leads the Warriors in scoring, pouring in 18 points per game. A two-time all-conference selection, Imig is ninth in the GPAC with 23 three-pointers, shooting better than 41% from beyond the arc, to go with 46 assists. Junior guard Galen Gullie, an all-conference pick last season, scores 13.2 points per game while leading the GPAC in three-point percentage (49%). The two-year starter has 28 three-pointers and averages nearly three rebounds per game. Newcomer Marcus Franklin scores 11.6 points per game while freshman Alex Starkel scores nine points per game and is third in the GPAC with 10 blocked shots.
Northwestern News and Notes...Northwestern has won three straight, including two consecutive GPAC match-ups, to improve to 2-3 in the conference, 8-6 overall. They have wins over Nebraska Wesleyan and Mount Marty and losses to Hastings, Morningside and Briar Cliff.
Northwestern ranks within the middle of the pack offensively, averaging 77 points per game and shooting 45% from the field. Defensively, they are giving up 75 points per game and outrebound their opponents by a +7 margin.
Zack Leeper leads the Red Raiders in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game. Leeper, the most recent member of the 1,000-point club, also is the team's top three-point shooter with 23 this season. Jordan Baker averages 13.7 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game, shooting 57% from the field. Joey Habtemariam also scores in double figures (10.2) and leads the team with 58 assists.
