Red Raiders Host Mount Marty

Game Time...Northwestern College goes for its second straight win as they play host to Mount Marty in a GPAC men's basketball match-up Wednesday night, Dec. 4. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8pm. Both teams are in search of their first conference win of the season as Northwestern is 0-3 in the GPAC, 6-6 overall. All-Time...In a series that began during the 1977-78 season, Northwestern holds a 45-16 all-time advantage over the Lancers. The Red Raiders are 9-1 over the last 10 match-ups against Mount Marty, splitting last year's games with each team winning on its home court. 

Scouting Mount Marty...The Lancers are in search of their first win for the 2013-14 season, coming in with an 0-2 league record, 0-6 overall. They opened conference play with home losses to Midland and Dordt and also have lost to Dakota State, Johnson & Wales, Presentation and York. 

Andrew Baker is in his first season as the Lancers head coach, spending two years as the top assistant under former head coach Jim Thorson who stepped down at the end of last year. He inherits just four players off a 2012-13 team that finished 10th in the GPAC with a 4-16 record, 8-21 overall. 

Mount Marty is scoring 62 points per game and shooting just under 40% from the field. They have made 30 three-pointers on the year, making 26% from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Lancers are giving up 78 points per game and are outrebounded by +11. 

Junior Bud Smith is the team's leading scorer, averaging 15 points per game. Another junior, Tyler Payer, averages 14.7 points per game while leading the team with 12 three-pointers and five rebounds per contest. Alex Irvine averages 9.3 points per game in his freshman season at MMC. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders evened their record at 6-6 with a 76-59 win over AIB in the final game of the Dordt/Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic played last Saturday afternoon. It marked the second win over the Eagles this season. Northwestern is 0-3 in the GPAC, losing road games to Hastings and Briar Cliff and a home to Morningside. 

Northwestern averages 77 points per game and is shooting 44% from the field. They have 77 three-pointers on the year, averaging just over six per game, and shooting 33% from beyond the arc. Defensively, Northwestern is giving up 76 points per game and holds a +7 advantage on the boards. 

Zack Leeper is one of two players scoring in double figures, averaging 16 points per game. The senior has scored in double figures in every game this season and is closing in on the 1,000-point milestone for his career (968 heading into Wednesday). Jordan Baker averages 13.6 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game, shooting 58% from the floor. Joey Habtemariam scores 9.3 points per game and leads the team with 49 assists.
