Men's Basketball To Play in Holiday Classic

Game Time...Northwestern College will play in the Dordt/Holiday Inn Express Men's Basketball Classic this weekend. The two-day event begins on Friday, Nov. 29 when Northwestern plays Central College at 6pm. They will then play AIB on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2pm. All-Time...Northwestern is 2-0 all-time against AIB, including an 82-79 overtime win over the Eagles last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. The Red Raiders are 14-8 all-time against Central, last playing the Dutch during the 2002-03 season. 

Scouting Reports...

   About Central...The Dutch are 2-1 so far this season, earning wins over Monmouth (Ill.) and Eureka (Ill.) but losing to Cornell (Iowa) last time out, 78-68. Affiliated with the NCAA D-III, Central plays in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. 

Craig Douma is in his second year as the head coach at Central, having served as highly successful high school coach prior to coming to the Dutch. He returns two starters and six letterwinners off a 2012-13 team that finished in a tie for sixth place in the IIAC with a 3-11 record, 10-14 overall. 

Central is averaging 83 points per game, shooting 48% from the field and 35% from the three-point line (25/71). Defensively, the Dutch are giving up 70 points per game. 

Senior guard Kevin Kaerwer leads the team in scoring, averaging 17 points and four rebounds per  game. The two-year letterwinner has a team-best 10 three-pointers this season, shooting 53% from beyond the arc. Matt Greenfield, a three-year letterwinner and returning starter, averages a double-double at 15.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He earned all-conference honors last year. Senior Fred Pratt leads the team with 13 assists and averages 9.3 points per game. 

 About AIB...The Eagles are 0-7 this season, including an 0-5 mark against teams from the GPAC. Last weekend, they lost to Northwestern 82-79 in overtime. 

Head coach Cory Jenkins is in his second season as the Eagles' head coach, taking over full-time duties last year at the semester break. Jenkins, a former standout player at the University of Northern Iowa, also spent two years as the team's assistant. He returns three starters and seven players off a 2012-13 team that finished 1-11 in the MCC, 1-30 overall. 

AIB averages 68 points per game while shooting 44% from the field and 28% (38/137) from beyond the arc. Opponents are scoring 87 points per game and hold a +11 edge in rebounding. Junior guard Brandon Eley returns as the team's leading scorer from last year and averages 17.7 points per game. Eley, an all-conference pick last year, also leads the team in rebounding at 5.5 boards per game. Junior Darryl Stewart, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin-Richland, scores 13.3 points per game. Sophomore Jason Cameron returns to the Eagles front court and scores 9.6 points per game and Brandon Rosales leads the team with 13 three-pointers. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders come into the weekend with a 5-5 record, 2-1 over the last three games. They defeated #18 Dakota State and AIB last week but lost to Morningside on Tuesday night in conference play. Northwestern is 0-3 in the GPAC. 

Northwestern defeated AIB 82-79 in overtime in a game played last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. The Red Raiders shot 44% for the game and was led by Joey Habtemariam with 18 points. Bryce Moss added 13 points and seven rebounds while Jordan Baker (12), Zack Leeper (10) and T.J. Buyert (10) were also in double figures. 

The Red Raiders average 77 points per game this season, shooting 44% from the field. They have made 68 three-pointers (34% from beyond the arc) and own a +5 advantage on the boards. Defensively, Northwestern is giving up 76 points per game. 

Zack Leeper is among three Red Raiders scoring in double figures, averaging 15.6 points per game. The senior is second on the team in three-pointers (15) and rebounds (5.2). Jordan Baker scores 12.2 points and is the top rebounder, pulling down 6.7 boards per game. Joey Habtemariam averages 10.2 points per game and leads the team with 43 assists. 

Up Next...Northwestern resumes GPAC play next week as they play host to Mount Marty on Wednesday night, Dec. 4 at 8pm.
