Game Time...Northwestern College heads on the longest road trip of its conference season on Saturday as they head to Hastings, Neb. to play the 23rd-ranked Broncos. Tip-off at the Lynn Farrell Arena is scheduled for 4pm. Northwestern, ranked 15th in the NAIA preseason poll, is 0-1 in the GPAC and 3-3 overall, losing two straight games heading into Saturday. All-Time...Northwestern has won six straight against Hastings and leads the all-time series 30-14.
Scouting Hastings...The Broncos enter the weekend with a 3-1 record, having defeated Baker, Bellevue and AIB but losing to Benedictine on Nov. 8. They earned a convincing 97-64 win over AIB last time out.
Bill Gavers, in his first season as the head coach, took over for long-time head coach Lance Creech who resigned last fall. Gavers was a long-time high school coach, spending 22 years at Grand Island Central Catholic where he won 421 games and led his team to 12 state tournaments. He inherits a Hastings team that returns four starters and eight players off last year's team that tied for fourth with an 11-9 record, 20-11 overall.
Hastings scores 78 points per game while shooting 50% from the field in four games this season. Defensively, they are giving up 70 points per game and hold a +4 advantage on the boards. Senior Brady Lollman, a two-time all-GPAC selection, leads the Broncos in scoring at 15.5 points per game. He has a team-high 12 three-pointers. Another senior guard, Jake Hamburger, scores 13 points per game and is second on the team with 13 assists. Dylan Flinn returns in the front court and averages 13 points and five rebounds per game, shooting 60% from the field. Newcomer Ibou Fall, a transfer from University of Missouri-St. Louis, averages 7.8 points and a team-best 6.8 boards per game.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have lost two straight and are 0-1 in conference play, 3-3 overall. Last time out, they lost to Briar Cliff in the GPAC opener, 91-77, played Wednesday night in Sioux City. The other two losses are to ranked teams, #18 Dakota State and #10 Davenport. Northwestern was ranked 15th in the NAIA preseason poll.
Northwestern scores 78 points per game, shooting 44% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc. Zack Leeper leads the team in scoring (16.8) and has been in double figures in all six games. Leeper, a two-time all-GPAC pick, has 12 three-pointers this season. Freshman Jordan Baker averages 11.7 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game, shooting 59% from the floor. Joey Habtemariam and Tyler Goldston are the other top scorers, averaging 9.7 and 9.3 points per game respectively.
