Game Time...Northwestern College goes for its third straight road win as they play Dakota State in a non-conference men's basketball match-up on Wednesday night in Madison, S.D. Tip-off scheduled for 7pm. 15th-ranked Northwestern is 2-0 on the year while #18 Dakota State is 1-0 this season. All-Time...Northwestern is 14-2 all-time against the Trojans, winning the last nine match-ups, including two last season: 78-70 and 77-62. Dakota State last defeated NWC during the 1990-91 season.
Scouting Dakota State...The Trojans opened their season with a 71-53 win over Mount Marty last week and bring an 1-0 record into Tuesday's contest. A member of the newly formed North Star Athletic Conference, DSU was picked first among five teams in the preseason poll. They were 18th in the NAIA coaches' preseason poll.
Gary Garner returns for his fifth season as the head coach at Dakota State after serving as coach for two NCAA D-I programs, Southwest Missouri State and Drake. Garner returns two starters and five players off a 2012-13 squad that finished 25-9 and qualified for the NAIA D-II National Championship for the second straight year. They lost in the quarterfinals to Grace (Ind.).
Dakota State shot 40% in the win over Mount Marty and made 11-of-31 three-point attempts. They held a huge 54-35 advantage on the glass but did committ 24 turnovers.
Seniors Yusuf Vinson and Cameron Krump lead DSU in scoring, averaging 12 points per game. Vinson, an all-conference selection last year and preseason all-league pick this year, also leads the team with 13 rebounds. Marcus Smith, another senior, leads the team with three three-pointers and averages 11 points per game. Freshman Adam Hofer is the fourth DSU player scoring in double figures, averaging 10 points per game.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are 2-0 this season, earning a pair of road wins over Jamestown and Valley City State last weekend. In both games, Northwestern used a big second half to rally from a first half deficit. They have outscored opponents 90-63 in the second half.
Northwestern is averaging 78 points per game, shooting 46% from the field and 36% (11/31) from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Red Raiders are giving up 67.5 points per game and are limiting opponents to just 38% from the field.
Zack Leeper leads a balanced offense that features four players scoring in double figures. The senior averages 16 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game. Leeper has three three-pointers this season. Tyler Goldston is scoring 12.5 points per game while Jordan Baker comes off the bench to score 11 points per game. Sophomore guard Joey Habtemariam throws in 10 points per game and has dished out 11 assists. Keegan Mulder and T.J. Buyert have four and three three-pointers, respectively, and Justin Van Kalsbeek scores 6.5 points per game while shooting 83% from the floor.
