Game Time… Northwestern goes for its eighth straight win this weekend as they play host to Dana in a GPAC men’s basketball game on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders are 3-0 in the GPAC, 7-3 overall, and earned votes in this week’s NAIA D-II men’s basketball coaches’ poll. Dana brings a 2-7 overall record, 0-3 in the GPAC, into this weekend. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
About Dana… Head Coach Chris Fear, in his 10th season with the Vikings, has lost five straight games after starting the season with a 2-2 mark. They have wins over Iowa Wesleyan and Peru State but lost to William Penn, Grand View and Dakota State in non-conference play, followed by losses to Briar Cliff, Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan in the GPAC.
Coach Fear returns two starters and five letterwinners off a 2008-09 team that tied for eighth in the GPAC with an 8-10 record, 15-15 overall. Jake Brandl, a 6-2 guard, returns for his final season after starting all 30 games last season. Brandl ranks sixth in the GPAC with 22 three-pointers and averages 11 points per game. AJ Arkfeld, another senior guard, is the other starter returning and averages just under 10 points per game. He leads the Vikings with 30 assists and ranks seventh in the GPAC with 20 three-pointers. Tristan Washington, a transfer from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, leads Dana in scoring (16.3) and is shooting over 57% from beyond the arc. Another senior, Danny Peterson, averages in double figures with 11 points per game.
Dana is the top three-point shooting in the GPAC with 92 trifectas, shooting 37% from beyond the arc.
Red Raider News and Notes…Northwestern won its seventh straight game last Wednesday as they knocked off fourth-ranked Dordt, 97-77. The Red Raiders scored 63 points, shot 58% from the field and nearly 70% from the three-point line in the second half. Walker Seim, the reigning GPAC player-of-the-week, scored 28 points to lead NWC. Ryan Hoogeveen registered his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Ben Miller chipped in 17 points. Mike Vorwald added a career-best 10 points as well.
The Raiders lead the GPAC in scoring (85), shooting a league-best 42% from the three-point line. Seim leads three NWC players scoring in double figures, averaging 19ppg. The sophomore leads the GPAC with 42 three-point baskets. Daniel Van Kalsbeek averages 19 points and a team-best seven rebounds per game. Ben Miller chips in 11.8 points and 5.7 boards per game. Mike Vorwald is third in the conference with 50 assists.
Coach Korver’s squad holds a +6 advantage in rebounding margin, ranking third in the conference.
