Game Time... Northwestern and Dordt will renew their rivalry for the 89th time Wednesday night as the Raiders play host to the Defenders in the Bultman Center. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 pm. NWC brings a six game win streak and a 2-0 GPAC record into Wednesday night's game. They are 6-3 overall. Fourth-ranked Dordt has won four straight games and is 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the GPAC. All-Time Series... The Red Raiders lead the all-time series, dating back to 1960, 67-21. The two teams split the season series in four of the past five years while Dordt holds a 5-6 advantage since the 2004-05 season.
Scouting the Defenders...Ross Douma is in his first season as the Defenders' head coach and brings a 7-1 record into the game against Northwestern. Dordt opened the season with three straight wins over Valley City State, Jamestown and Grand View before falling to NCAA D-II Southwest State on Nov. 17. Since then, the Defenders are 4-0 with wins over ranked teams, Dakota Wesleyan, William Penn and Bellevue, along with a 90-62 win over Central Baptist.
Coach Douma inherited a Defender squad that returns its top three scorers and four of five starters from a 2008-09 team that finished 15-14. Dordt tied with Dana for seventh place in the GPAC with an 8-10 record. Leading the way for the Defenders are seniors Logan Kingma and Michael Eekhoff. Both players earned first team all-GPAC honors in 2009 and second team accolades in 2008. Kingma averages 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, shooting 35% from beyond the arc (12/34). Eekhoff ranks second on the team with 14.4 points per game, shooting 42% from the floor. He leads the team with 34 assists and pulls down 5.6 boards per game. Junior Brandon Oldenkamp, an honorable mention all-GPAC pick in 2009, averages 13.4 points and a team best 6.3 rebounds per game. He leads the Defenders with 18 three-pointers this season. Freshman Trevor Wolterstorff leads Coach Douma's squad averaging over 17 points per game, shooting 55% from the field. He averages 5.8 rebounds per game. Another freshman, Shawn Keizer, rounds out the starting lineup and averages 9.6 points per game with 11 three-pointers. Dustin Katje (5.4) and Jordan Vogel (4.4) are the top reserves for the Defenders.
Dordt averages over 80 points per game, shooting 45% from the field, and give up 75ppg.
Last Time Out... Dordt knocked off 12th-ranked Bellevue last Saturday 76-70 in the final game of the Dordt Thanksgiving Classic. The Defenders led 40-32 at intermission and maintained the advantage throughout the second half. Shawn Keizer was one of three Defenders who scored in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Michael Eekhoff netted 15 points and became the 27th player in the program's history to score 1,000 points. Logan Kingma chipped in 14 points, going 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Northwestern won its sixth straight game as they knocked off Central Baptist 107-96 at the Dordt Thanksgiving Classic last Saturday afternoon. The Raiders used a 24-0 run in the first half to pull away and held off CBU's comeback bid down the stretch to earn the win. Walker Seim scored 29 points for the second straight night to lead Coach Korver's squad. Seim made six three-pointers and went 10-for-13 from the floor. Daniel Van Kalsbeek added 16 points and eight rebounds while Stuart Goslinga added 10 points off the bench.
Red Raider Notes... After three straight road losses to open the season, Northwestern has won six straight games including a 2-0 start in conference play. The Raiders defeated Doane and Mount Marty in the GPAC and followed with wins over 12th-ranked Bellevue and Central Baptist last weekend.
Northwestern averages 84 points per game and ranks ninth in the NAIA, shooting 41% from beyond the arc. Opponents are scoring 78ppg and are shooting 44% from the field.
The Red Raiders are led by Daniel Van Kalsbeek who ranks second in the GPAC averaging 19.8 points per game. The freshman has scored in double-figures in all nine games and surpassed 20 points four times this season. Van Kalsbeek also has three double-doubles and leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. Walker Seim averages 18 points per game and ranks second in the NAIA with 37 three-pointers. He is shooting 54% from beyond the arc, fifth best in the nation. Like Van Kalsbeek, Seim has scored in double figures in all nine games. Ben Miller is the third Raider player scoring in double figures with 11.2 points per game. Brent Dunkelberger and Ryan Stock come off the bench to score 6.6 and 6.1 points per game. Mike Vorwald ranks ninth in the NAIA with 48 assists and averages three points per game.
