Game Time... The Red Raider men's basketball team goes for its third straight win Saturday as they play host to Doane in the conference opener for both teams. Northwestern is 2-3 overall this season with a pair of wins last weekend against Grace (Neb.) and Kansas Wesleyan. Doane has lost its last three games and is 1-3 this season. All-Time Series... Northwestern leads the all-time series 19-4. The two teams split last year with the Raiders recording a 68-47 win in Crete, Neb. while Doane knocked off NWC 86-84 in overtime in Orange City.

Last Time Out...Doane lost its third straight game last Sunday (Nov. 15), falling to the U. of Nebraska-Omaha, 96-67. The Tigers trailed by just two (36-34) at the half but were outscored 60-33 in the second half. UNO shot 62% in the second half and held a 51-34 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Bryan Meyer led Doane with 21 points and eight rebounds while Jake Johnson netted 10 points off the bench.

Northwestern rallied from a six-point, second-half deficit to defeat Kansas Wesleyan, 86-83, for its third straight win. The Red Raiders led by six (40-34) after shooting 52% in the first half. They cooled off in the second half (34%) but committed just four turnovers compared to nine for KWU in the second frame. Daniel Van Kalsbeek registered his second career double-double with 24 points and 11 boards while Walker Seim established new career highs in points (22)) and three-pointers (6).

Scouting Report on Doane... The Tigers and head coach Ian Brown opened the season with an 81-66 win over Friends (Kan.) but followed with three straight losses to #16 Bellevue (72-66), Tabor (76-60) and U. of Nebraska-Omaha (96-67). Coach Brown is in his eighth year at Doane and returns three starters off a 2008-09 team that finished with a 3-15 GPAC record, 10-21 overall.

Doane comes in averaging 69 points per game, shooting 39% from the field. Defensively, the Tigers' are giving up 78 points per game and are -2 in rebounding margin. Sophomores Jens Scholl and Bryan Meyer lead the Tigers in scoring, averaging 10.3 and 10.0 points per game. Scholl is the top player on the glass, pulling down 7.8 boards per game. Trent Schlautman is averaging 9.5 points per game and leads the team with seven three-pointers. Zach Moult (9.0ppg) and Jake Johnson (8.1) are also among the top scorers coming off the Doane bench. Johnson earned honorable mention all-GPAC honors in 2009 after transferring from the U. of Nebraska-Kearney. Another honorable mention all-GPAC player, Tyler Weatherholt, also returns and averages 6.5 points per game.

Raider Notes... After losing its first three games, two by 10 points or less, the Raiders bring a two-game win streak into its match-up against Doane. Coach Korver's squad knocked off Grace (108-69) and Kansas Wesleyan (86-83) last weekend at the Pizza Ranch Classic. This is the GPAC opener for Coach Korver's squad, who were picked to finish seventh in the GPAC in the preseason coaches poll.

Northwestern is averaging nearly 85 points per game, shooting 45% from the floor, while giving up 82 points per game. They are outrebounding their opponents by a +4 margin this season. Daniel Van Kalsbeek averages a team-high 19.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with two double-doubles this season. The freshman is shooting 51% from the floor and has scored in double-figures in all five games. Walker Seim ranks fourth in the NAIA with 20 three-pointers, shooting 54% from beyond the arc. Seim averages 15.8 points and 4.8 points per game. Ben Miller is the third Raider scoring in double figures at 13.6ppg. Ryan Hoogeveen (7.6) and Jerome Hoegh (7.5) are the other top scorers for NWC and both players are shooting over 33% from beyond the arc. Mike Vorwald ranks 12th in the NAIA with 28 assists.
