The Northwestern College men's basketball team opened its season with a 1-1 record this past weekend at the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders lost to Jamestown on Friday night, 78-62, but followed with a 96-85 win over Valley City State on Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied at 16, the Jimmies used a 7-0 run to pull away from Northwestern. Jamestown led 46-29 at the half but the Red Raiders came back to cut it to four, 49-45, on a jumper by Ryan Hoogeveen with 12:38 left in the second half. The Jimmies, though, scored the next nine points and never looked back, winning 78-62.

The Red Raiders shot 42% from the field, 28% from beyond the arc. Seniors Kale Wiertzema and Andrew Stimson scored in double figures with 23 and 10 points, respectively. Michael Jiskoot added six points and a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench for Coach Korver's squad.

In Saturday's 96-85 win over Valley City State, Northwestern led 46-29 at the half and went up by as much as 26 points in the second period. The Vikings rallied late and cut the NWC lead down to 10 but the Red Raiders held off the comeback bid.

The game featured 62 fouls and 82 free throws attempted. Northwestern shot 50% from the floor compared to 43% by the Vikings. Ben Brown scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Jiskoot recorded his first career double-double with a career highs in points (16) and boards (15). Wiertzema added 13 points, four rebounds and six assists.  Northwestern controlled the glass with a 38-27 advantage.

The Red Raiders travel down to Bellevue, Neb. to play the Bruins tomorrow night at 7:00 pm.
