The Red Raiders defeated Concordia, 87-84 in overtime, last Saturday night in Seward, Neb. Northwestern, ranked 19th in last week's NAIA poll, improved to 11-3 in the GPAC conference and 20-4 overall. The host Bulldogs fall to 10-16 overall, 4-11 in the GPAC.
The first half featured four ties and three lead changes. With Concordia leading by one, 22-21, the Bulldogs closed the first half on a 17-10 run to lead 39-31 at the half.
Concordia scored the first five points of the second half to grab their biggest lead, 44-31. The Bulldogs still led by 10 (68-58) with 6:12 left in the game before Northwestern went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 70. Concordia regained the lead with 16 seconds left when Tyler Bredehoeft converted a short jumper. After a Northwestern timeout, Red Raider guard Curt Schilling hit a 10-foot jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime, 72-72.
In overtime, Concordia took the early lead, 80-76, before the Red Raiders outscored the hosts 7-1 to grab the lead for good and earn the 87-84 win. NWC went 4-5 from the field and made all six of their free throw attempts in the extra period.
Northwestern shot 51% from the floor, 37% from beyond the arc, compared to 43% for the Bulldogs. Curt Schilling scored 24 points to lead four Red Raiders in double figures. Kale Wiertzema netted 14 points, all in the second half, while Chad Schuiteman and Andrew Stimson added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Schuiteman pulled down seven rebounds to lead NWC.
The Red Raiders will host eighth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in a showdown of ranked teams. Tipoff will be at 8:00 pm.
