Northwestern defeated USF last night, 84-77, in a GPAC conference men's basketball game. With the win, the 19th-ranked Red Raiders improved to 19-4 overall, 10-3 in the league. They are tied with Dordt for third place in the GPAC, just 1/2 game behind second place Dakota Wesleyan.

The first half featured eight ties and four lead changes and ended with the two team's tied at 40. USF began the second half on a 13-0 scoring run to pull ahead with their biggest lead, 53-40. Northwestern, however, recovered and outscored the visiting Cougars 24-10 to take the lead by one, 64-63. With the score tied at 66, Northwestern took the lead for good on a Kale Wiertzema lay-up with 5:58 left to go in the game and ended the Cougars three game win streak with the 84-77 win.

The Red Raiders shot 53% for the game compared to 50% for USF. Curt Schilling led all scorers with 21 points while Chad Schuiteman recorded another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kale Wiertzema added 13 points and was one of four NWC players who dished out three assists. Northwestern out-rebounded the Cougars 35-27.

Coach Korver's squad will next play Concordia on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Seward, Neb.
