Game Time... The Red Raiders will host the USF Cougars as part of a GPAC doubleheader this evening in the Bultman Center. Tipoff for the men's contest is scheduled for 8:00 pm. Northwestern, with an 18-4 overall record and ranked ninth in last week's NAIA poll, is in fourth place in the GPAC with a 9-3 record. USF is in seventh place in the league with a 6-6 record and is 9-14 overall.
Scouting Report... The Cougars won their third straight game last Saturday afternoon as they defeated Midland Lutheran at home, 66-53. USF committed just seven turnovers and limited Midland Lutheran to just 37% from the field. Three Cougar players, Gerad Van Leur, Kyle Johnson and Tut Yual, scored 10 points each in the win.
Yual, a 6-7 senior forward, earned GPAC Player-of-the-Week honors for his play last week. Yual averaged 13 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins over Mount Marty (57-53) and Midland Lutheran.
Four Cougar players average in double figures on the season: Yual, Van Leur, Jesse Huser and Matt Malloy. Van Leur ranks second in the league shooting 60% from the floor. Huser is fourth in the league with 49 three pointers and is shooting 44% from beyond the arc.
Red Raider Notes...Northwestern recorded a 77-53 home win over Nebraska Wesleyan last Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders never trailed against the visiting Prairie Wolves and led 34-21 at halftime. Four players scored in double figures, led by Curt Schilling with 17 points. Andrew Stimson and Mark DeYounge scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Travis Van Regenmorter tied his career high with 10 points and also pulled down four rebounds. Coach Korver’s squad held Nebraska Wesleyan to just 31% from the field.
NWC defeated USF 86-76 back on Jan. 9 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Cougars used an 11-1 run late in the first half to grab the lead at the half, 46-42. USF extended the lead to 11 early in the second half before Northwestern went on a 22-9 run to take the lead for good with 7:18 left to play. Kale Wiertzema led all scorers with 23 points while Curt Schilling and Chad Schuiteman added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Schilling leads the Red Raiders averaging 19 points per game and is shooting 48% from beyond the arc. He leads the GPAC with 61 three pointer this season. Chad Schuiteman averages a double-double this season with 15 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. The senior is shooting 55% from the field and is third in the GPAC with 90 assists. Kale Wiertzema and Mark DeYounge also average in double figures at 12.2 and 10 points per game, resepctively. Point guard Andrew Stimson ranks second on the team with 31 three pointers and is shooting 41% from beyond the arc.
