Game Time... The Red Raiders will host the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves for the first time this season Saturday afternoon at the Bultman Center. The tip-off is scheduled for 4pm. Northwestern, ranked ninth in the NAIA, stands at 17-4 overall and 8-3 in the GPAC. The Prairie Wolves occupy seventh place in the GPAC with a 5-6 record, and are 11-7 overall.
Scouting Report... The Prairie Wolves defeated Dana, 72-61, in their last contest. NWU led most of the game even though the score was very close until about the 10 minute mark of the second half. The Wolves pulled away then and never looked back. Dylan Aylward scored 27 points and Marcus Minzel, the team’s leading scorer, put up 13 and had six rebounds.
The NWU offense is averaging 65 points per game. Marcus Minzel, who has started every game and spends over 30 minutes per game on the court, leads Nebraska Wesleyan averaging 13ppg. Brandon Arp is dangerous behind the arc, making 50 percent of his three-point attempts.
The Wolves lean heavily on a defense that is ranked first in the conference and fourth in the nation giving up only 60ppg. Ryan Thramer has collected 80 defensive rebounds, fourth best in the GPAC.
Coach Cam Schuknecht is in his second season at the helm of the Prairie Wolves. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Wartburg College in 1998. Three years later Shukencht earned a master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Kansas.
Red Raider Notes...Coach Korver’s squad suffered a 84-60 loss to Dordt this past Wednesday night in Orange City. In a showdown of ranked teams, Northwestern led 2-0 but the Defenders led from that point on. The loss by the Red Raiders pushed them back into a pack of five teams all within two games of each other vying for second place in the conference standings.
Chad Schuiteman was the only NWC player in double figures with 15 points. In doing to, the senior surpassed the 2000 point mark in his career. He now has amassed a total of 2007 points. Schuiteman ranks second in the nation in rebounds (11.7), first in defensive rebounds and second in double-doubles (14). In addition he is ranked ninth in the GPAC in scoring (15).
The Red Raiders lead the conference in scoring with 87 points per game. Curt Schilling is the team’s top scorer averaging 19ppg, second best in the GPAC. He is also lethal from behind the three point line shooting 50% from beyond the arc.
Next up... Northwestern will host USF next Wednesday, Feb. 6, with the tipoff scheduled for 8:00 pm. It will be a rematch of the Red Raiders 86-76 win over the Cougars back on Jan. 9. Coach Korver’s squad will then take to the road to play Concordia in Seward, Neb. on Feb. 9.
