Northwestern and Mount Marty will take the court in GPAC action on Saturday, December 8, in a 4:00 p.m. tip off. Northwestern comes in with a 8-2 record (2-1 GPAC) while Mount Marty comes in with a 2-7 overall record (0-3 GPAC). The Red Raiders defeated Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night 100-95, the win was the 200th in the career for Coach Kris Korver. Korver, who is in his eighth year with the Red Raiders, has the best overall winning percentage in Northwestern men's basketball history at 82%, 200-45. For the game, the Red Raiders connected on 49% of their field goal attempts, 61% from the three point line, for the game. Curt Schilling led four NWC players in double figures with 34 points. He was perfect from the free throw line (11/11). Kale Wiertzema netted 20 points while Chad Schuiteman recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Hoogeveen scored a career high 13 points off the bench for NWC. Northwestern out-rebounded DWU 42-32 for the game led by Schuiteman (12) Schilling and Hoogeveen with five each. Andrew Stimson dished out five assists.
Mount Marty last played Briar Cliff on Wednesday, and were defeated 83-62. They were led in scoring by senior Pat Anderson (23) and freshman Rudy Harper (11). The Lancers trailed at the half 33-25 and were outscored by the Chargers 50-37 in the second half. Stan Johnson led the Lancers with six rebounds and Anderson dished out two assists, tops on the team. Mt. Marty shot 13 for 20 from the free throw line, somewhere they have struggled as a team, shooting 58.9% from the line this season, lowest in the GPAC.
Northwestern comes in with the highest scoring offense in the GPAC, scoring 92.1 a game, while Mt. Marty comes in with the 6th best scoring defense, allowing only 70.4 a contest. Northwestern is currently 2nd in the conference in assists per game with 17.8, while Mt. Marty is ranked 13th with a 9.78 average.
Mt. Marty's starting lineup will feature five seniors including Anderson who leads Mt. Marty with a 15.4 ppg average (9th in the GPAC). Johnson is 11th in the conference in rebounds a game with a 5.9 average.
Northwestern is led by senior All-American Chad Schuiteman, who is averaging a double-double with 15.4 ppg and a conference high 11.4 rpg. Senior running mate Curt Schilling is second in the league with averaging 20.9 ppg and junior Kale Wiertzema is 14th with a 14.1 average. Schuiteman is also second in the GPAC with a 4.5 assist per game average.
Up next Northwestern will travel to LaCrosse, Wisc. to play Viterbo in non-conference action on December 15th. Mount Marty will also be in non-conference action, playing Dakota State on December 14th in Yankton, S.D.
