Raiders Host Mount Marty In GPAC Men's Basketball

Game Time... Northwestern plays host to Mount Marty this evening in GPAC men's basketball. Tipoff in the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8:00pm. The Red Raiders are in sixth place in the GPAC with a 6-6 record, 11-11 overall while Mount Marty is currently in 12th place in the GPAC with a 3-9 record, 5-18 overall. TeamAll-Time Series... Northwestern holds a 36-14 advantage in the season series, including a 12-0 record over the past six seasons. The Red Raiders defeated Mount Marty 75-72 in Yankton, S.D. earlier this season.

Last Meeting...Northwestern won its fourth straight game and rallied from an 11-point, halftime deficit to defeat Mount Marty 75-72 on Nov. 24. The Raiders trailed 40-29 at intermission but outscored the Lancers 19-8 to start the second half and after a basket by Brent Dunkelberger, tied the game at 48. A basket by Daniel Van Kalsbeek put Northwestern up 55-53, its first lead since early in the first half, and the Raiders built up a four point lead (62-58). Mount Marty went on a 9-2 run to regain the lead, 67-64, but three straight baskets by Northwestern put the Raiders back up for good, 71-67. Ryan Hoogeveen nailed a three-pointer during the decisive run. Miller and Van Kalsbeek sealed the win with some key free throws down the stretch.

Van Kalsbeek led the way with a game high 26 points, followed by Walker Seim with 13. Jared Wall led Mount Marty with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Mount Marty News and Notes...The Lancers opened the season with an 0-9 record and then proceeded to go 3-2 over a three week stretch which included a 66-57 home win over a ranked USF squad. MMC followed with five straight losses, all within the GPAC, but ended the slide with an impressive 71-60 win over Morningside. Last time out, they lost to Dakota State, 59-58, in non-conference play last weekend. Down 52-38 with nine minutes left, Mount Marty stormed back to tie the game at 56 with under a minute left. The Lancers came up with a big defensive stop on the next possession and Dan Harmon converted a lay-up with 2.3 seconds to give MMC its first lead of the game. After a timeout however, Dakota State nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to record the dramatic win. Stephen Klekas led three Lancer players in double figures with 16 points.

Last year, Mount Marty finished the season with a 7-24 record, 4-14 and in 12th place in the GPAC. They return four starters and return nine letterwinners off that squad and were picked to finish 11th in the GPAC preseason coaches' poll.

Coach Thorson's squad is averaging 59ppg, shooting 40% from the field and 33% from the three-point line. Defensively, the Lancers lead the GPAC in giving up just 66 points per game. They are outrebounded by a +3 margin. Weston Kusser and Justin Peters headline the list of returners after earning honorable mention all-GPAC honors in 2008-09. A junior guard, Kusser averages 7.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-best 49 assists. Peters, a senior forward, averages over seven points and three boards per game. Jared  Wall, a 6-9 junior, leads the team in both scoring (10) and rebounding (7.1). He also leads the GPAC with 40 blocked shots. Dan Harmon averages 8.5 points per game and Trey Krier leads the team with 38 three-pointers.

Raider Notes...Last time out on Jan 30, Northwestern lost to Dordt 78-70 in Sioux Center. Both teams struggled from the field with Northwestern shooting 37% (27/73) and Dordt Hoog40% (25/63). Daniel Van Kalsbeek led the Raiders with 17 points while Walker Seim netted 14, all in the second half. Ryan Stock scored 12 points before fouling out with five minutes left to go. Northwestern was outrebounded 48-41 and was led by Ben Miller with 11.

The Red Raiders continue to lead the GPAC in scoring, averaging 85 points per game. One of the top shooting teams in the league, Coach Korver's squad is shooting 46% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc. They average 7.7 three-pointers per game.

Daniel Van Kalsbeek ranks second in the GPAC in scoring (19.2) and ninth in both rebounding (6.9) and field goal percentage (56%). The freshman has scored in double figures in all but one game and has registered four double-doubles. Walker Seim is third in the GPAC in scoring (19.1) and ranks fourth in the NAIA with 82 three-pointers. The sharp-shooting sophomore is shooting 47% from beyond the arc and has knocked down 101 three-pointers in his career as a Red Raider. Ben Miller is the third NWC player scoring in double figures (11.9) and ranks seventh in the GPAC in rebounding (6.8). Brent Dunkelberger comes off the bench to score 8.3 points per game while Ryan Hoogeveen averages 8.1 points per game. Ryan Stock (7.0, 25 three-pointers) and Mike Vorwald (3.2, 108 assists) round out the top scorers for Coach Korver's squad.
