The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that Michael Jiskoot, a junior from Orange City, Iowa, was named the 2009
recipient of the prestigious Emil S. Liston Award. The award, presented annually by Daktronics, recognizes a male and female junior basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability. Since 1950, the award has honored the memory of the NAIA's first executive director Emil S. Liston. Mr. Liston was the founder of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) and played a fundamental role in the NAIA men's basketball tournament.
Jiskoot started 26 games for the Raiders last season and ranked third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. He pulled down a team-high 7.5 rebounds, third best in the conference, and led the team with four double-doubles. Jiskoot ranked fourth in the GPAC, shooting 58% from the floor. He also earned honorable mention all-GPAC honors for head coach Kris Korver's squad that finished with a 16-13 record.
A standout in the classroom, Jiskoot was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete earlier this year. To earn this honor, a student athlete must carry at least a 3.5 GPA on a standard 4.0 scale. Jiskoot is an accounting/finance major.
Jiskoot is the fifth Red Raider to have received the Emil S. Liston Award, and the first since 2003. Dave Bomgaars earned the honor in 1976 and was followed by Rachel Binneboese (2000), Brandon Woudstra (2002) and Jaime Woudstra (2003).
