Raiders Sign Guard Pair to Play Basketball at NWC

Mark Johnson (Ames, Iowa) and Mike Vorwald (Worthington, Minn.) have signed letters of intent to continue their basketball careers at Northwestern College next year. Johnson will also run track for the Red Raiders.

Johnson is a three-year letter winner who played for Gilbert High School. The 6’0” point guard earned honorable mention all-conference honors as both a junior and senior. Johnson set a school record for free throw percentage in a season (91%) and also shot 38% from beyond the arc. A member of the National Honor Society, Johnson plans to major in math at Northwestern.

“We are thrilled that Mark has decided to come to Northwestern,” commented head coach Kris Korver. “He is a good athlete who sees the court and defends well. We look forward to watching Mark grow as a player and student over the next four years.”

A two-year letter winner and sprinter for the Gilbert High School track and field team, Johnson boasts personal bests of 11.4 in the 100m, 23.3 in the 200m, 52.1 in the 400m and 20’11” in the long jump. He is the son of John and Beth.

“Mark is a very good athlete who will compete well in the 200-400m events,” commented head coach Nate Wolf. “He has experienced quality coaching and good success in high school. I look for him to make a smooth transition to the college level and believe his best days of track are ahead of him.”

Vorwald is a 5’10” point guard who lettered four years for Worthington High School. He finished his career ranked second in the program’s history with Vorwald481 assists and ninth in points (806). Vorwald dished out a school-record 226 assists and averaged 13 points his senior year while earning honorable mention all-state honors. He helped lead his team to a 20-6 record and sectional finals berth. Vorwald earned all-conference honors three years, including first team accolades as a junior and senior. He plans to major in education at Northwestern and is the son of Ron and Kris.

“Mike is a true point guard,” commented Korver. “He has great court sense, vision and makes the game easier for others with his unselfish play. We look forward to watching Mike continue to develop his game over the next four years.”
