Two players off the Northwestern College men’s basketball team received postseason honors for their work this past season.
Kale Wiertzema, a senior guard from Hills, Minn., was named to the 2009 State Farm Coaches’ NAIA D-II All-America Team. Selected and voted on by
the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), players earning this honor represent the finest basketball players across America. Wiertzema led the conference in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game, and ranked in the league’s top 10 in three-pointers (52), assists (94) and steals (42). He closed his Red Raider career 13th all-time in scoring (1,576) and 10th in assists (376). Wiertzema was named GPAC Player-of-the-Year and also earned first team All-American honors from the NAIA. Michael Jiskoot, a junior post player from Orange City, Iowa, was named the GPAC representative for the prestigious Emil S. Liston Award. This national award is presented annually by Daktronics and the NAIA and recognizes a male and female junior basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability. Since 1950, the award honors the memory of the NAIA’s first executive director Emil S. Liston. Mr. Liston was the founder of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) and played a principal role in the NAIA men’s basketball tournament. The NAIA will announce the recipients of the award later this year.
Jiskoot earned honorable mention all-conference honors after ranking third in the GPAC pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game. He also scored in double
figures at 10.5 points per game, shooting an impressive 58% from the floor, fourth best in the league. In addition, Jiskoot, an accounting/finance major, was named NAIA Scholar Athlete in which he must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA.
Northwestern finished the season with a 16-13 overall record. They were seeded fourth in the GPAC postseason tournament and lost to fifth-seeded Hastings in the quarterfinals to end the season.
