Sam Van Ginkel has been named a first team NAIA/AFCA All-American as announced by the American Football Coaches' Association earlier today.
One of just seven repeat selections from the 2015 team, Van Ginkel takes home the top national honor for the third time (named BSN All-American in 2013). He is the 114th All-American in program history and the ninth Red Raider defensive linemen to take home the national honor over the last 12 years.
Van Ginkel led the GPAC and ranked ninth in the NAIA with 11 sacks this season. The senior was second on the team with 38.5 tackles and totaled a team-high nine quarterback hurries. Van Ginkel, a four-time first team all-conference selection, closed his career as the GPAC and program's all-time leader with 39.5 sacks.
Northwestern ended the year in fifth place in the GPAC with a 4-4 league record, 4-6 overall.
