Runners to Compete in Final Tune-Up Before Postseason

The Event... Northwestern will be running in their final regular-season race this weekend at a meet hosted by Mount Marty College. The race is the final tune-up for the GPAC KyleChampionships on Saturday, November 7. The women will run a 5,000 meter race and the men will run 8,000 meters. The meet begins at 10:00.

The Teams... This will be one of the largest meets of the season for the Raiders with at least 17 teams competing, including: Briar Cliff,  Buena Vista, Concordia, Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan, Dickinson State, Dordt, Jamestown, Mayville State, Midland Lutheran,  Minot State, Mount Marty, Morningside, Sioux Falls, South Dakota Tech and Valley City State.

Last Year... The Raider women’s team placed seventh out of 14 teams with a team score of 156. The host school, USD (NCAA D-I) won the women’s team championship with 52 points. Black Hills State finished second with 82, followed by Morningside (108) and Concordia (114). Charity Miles was the top NWC runner as the sophomore finished in 11th place with a time of 19:13. Sara Hess placed 24th with a time of 19:41, followed by Jenna Sorensen (29th-19:45) and Stephanie Powell (41st-20:02).

The men’s team finished in 10th place out of 15 teams with a team score of 238. Concordia won the team title with 34 points, followed by Black Hills State in second with 62. Danny Owens led the Red Raiders with a 41st place finish out of 142 runners with a time of 27:33. Kyle Gerhard finished just three spots back in 27:43. Jack Peterson finished the 8000m in 28:00, good for 50th place.

Last Time Out...Making her season debut, Charity Miles finished in seventh place in leading the Northwestern women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Briar Cliff Invitational on Oct. 10.

Miles finished the 5K race in a time of 18:53, 53 seconds behind the overall winner. Six other Northwestern runners finished with a time under 20 minutes, led by Ingrid Carlson in Jenna22nd place with a season best time of 19:22. Teresa Scholten and Sara Hess crossed the line in 28 and 29th place, respectively, with season best times of 19:34 and 19:38. Leslie Stover (32-19:40), Angela Wiggins (37-19:46) and Breann Rozeboom (19:56) also finished under 20 minutes and recorded season-bests.

Northwestern placed fourth out of 12 teams with 113 points. Morningside captured the women's team championship with 40 points, followed by Doane (87) and Dakota State (88). The Raiders received votes in the Oct. 14 NAIA women's cross country poll.

The men's team placed ninth out of 12 teams with a team score of 197. Dakota State captured the team title with 46, followed by Doane (65), Dordt (96) and Hastings (126). Kyle Gerhard was the top runner for NWC, placing 26th in the 8K race with a personal best time of 26:58. Lee Stover finished 30th with a time of 27:07, followed by Sean Guthmiller (41-27:27) and Jack Peterson (51-27:40). Each of these runners turned in season-best performances.

Up Next…The Raiders will travel to the GPAC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 7 in Fremont, Neb., followed by the NAIA National Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 21 at Vancouver, Wash.
