The Event...The Northwestern College cross country teams will compete at the Briar Cliff Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Adams Lake Nature Reserve in McCook Lake, S.D. The women's 5K race will be at 10am, followed by the men's 8K race.
Teams Competing...10 teams are scheduled to compete, including runners from Northwestern, Buena Vista, Briar Cliff, Creighton, Dakota Wesleyan, Iowa Lakes Community College, Morningside, Mount Marty, University of Sioux Falls, Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State.
Last Year...Both Red Raider cross country teams finished in the top five at last year's Briar Cliff Invite.
The women's team totaled 89 points and finished fourth out of nine teams, second among the GPAC teams that competed. University of Sioux Falls won the women's event with 45 points, followed by Creighton (53) and Mount Marty (69).
Kelley Thurman was the top finisher for the women's team, crossing the finish line in 10th place with a personal-best time of 19:01. Dawn Gildersleeve finished just behind in 11th place with a time of 19:03. Amber Sandbulte was the next to cross the finish line and placed 17th with a personal-best time of 19:22. Jackie Niewenhuis and Janet Pitsenberger finished 26th and 27th, both with a personal best time of 19:35. Northwestern women's runners turned in a total of 12 personal best times.
The Red Raider men's team finished third out of 12 teams, totaling 94 points. USF won the men's race with 31 points, followed by Morningside with 62.
Will Norris led the men's team with a personal best time of 26:10 in the 8K race, good for 15th place. Skyler Giddings and Logan Hovland finished with a time of 26:22 and in 16th and 17th place. Kyle Anderson (25th-26:44), Caleb Vander Baan (26th-26:44) and Zach Wittenberg (27th-26:46) were the Red Raiders 4-6 runners. Nine Northwestern men's runners set personal bests in today's race.
Northwestern News and Notes...The men's team is ranked 25th in most recent NAIA coaches' poll, released earlier this week. Northwestern is one of three GPAC teams recognized in the rating, joining Morningside and Dordt.
Senior Skyler Giddings has been one of the Red Raiders' top runners in all three meets this season, recording one top five finish at the Herb Blakely Invite. Another senior, Logan Hovland, has also been one of the team's top runners, placing in the top 10 in one meet. Will Norris, Peter Smith and Hans Epp have also been among the team's top seven runners in all three meets.
The women's team has been led by Amber Sandbulte who placed second at the Herb Blakely Invite. She has been the Red Raiders top runner in all three meets. Katie Bosch has been the team's second runner, finishing third at the Herb Blakely Invite. Kelley Thurman, Heather Heilman and Jill Cunard have all been among the team's top seven runners in the three meets prior.
