Runners To Compete at Dean White Invite

The Event...The Northwestern College cross country teams will compete in the Dean White Invitational, hosted by Doane College, this weekend in Crete, Neb. The women's 5K race will begin at 10am, followed by the men's 8K race at around 10:45am. 

Teams Competing...Northwestern joins GPAC teams; Dakota Wesleyan, Midland, Doane, Briar Cliff and Hastings, along with a few non-conference teams; Peru State, William Penn, York and College of St. Mary.

Last Year...Both Northwestern teams finished second at last year's Dean White Invite held in Crete, Neb. The women's team totaled 52 points, second only to Doane College with 29. The Red Raider men's team scored 44 points, 17 behind first place Doane.

Senior Amy Van Skike led the way for the women's team, crossing the finish line in seventh place with a 5K time of 19:58. Sophomore Amber Sandbulte also placed in the top 10, finishing in ninth place with a time of 20:08. Leslie Stover (11th) and Dawn Gildersleeve (12th) finished right behind with times of 20:14 and 20:15. Seven teams and 63 runners competed in the women's 5K race.

Skyler Giddings led the men's team for the third time this fall, finising fourth with a personal best 8K time of 26:54. Logan Hovland crossed the finish line right behind in fifth place with a personal best time of 26:57. Junior Zach Wittenberg placed eighth with a time of 27:23 while both Andrew Lichter (19th) and Taylor Bodin (20th) ran personal bests of 28:15 and 28:17.

Red Raider News and Notes...Both teams are coming off an outstanding performance at the Herb Blakely Invite, held in Madison, S.D two weeks ago. The men's team won the meet and three individuals, Skyler Giddings, Will Norris and Logan Hovland, finished first, second and third. The women's team finished second out of seven teams and placed five runners in the top 15, led by Dawn Gildersleeve with a third place finish. Kelley Thurman finished sixth and Amber Sandbulte placed eighth overall. 

Up Next...The Red Raiders will compete at the Briar Cliff Invite on Saturday, Oct. 12, in McCook Lake, S.D.
