The Event...The Northwestern College cross country teams will make their season debut this weekend at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls, S.D. The meet will run at the Yankton Trails Park (I-229 to exit 3 Minnesota Ave. or Corner of I-229 and Minnesota) and will begin with the women’s 3-mile race at approximately 8:30 pm with the men's 4-miler to follow at 9:00.
Teams Competing...Among the teams competing are at least five other GPAC teams; Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Doane, Dordt and Morningside, along with Augustana, Dakota State and USF.
Last Year...Dawn Gildersleeve (Elkhart, Iowa) ran an outstanding race to lead the women's team, finishing 17th out of 114 runners with a three-mile time of 18:05. Sophomore Amber Sandbulte (Sioux Center, Iowa) crossed the finish line in 30th place with a time of 18:35 while senior Leslie Stover (Adrian, Minn.) finished in 34th place with a time of 18:56. Lauren Spranger (Trenary, Mich.) placed 36th with an impressive time of 19:02, running in her first collegiate race.
The men's team was led by Skyler Giddings (Pella, Iowa), who finished in 26th place with a 4-mile time of 20:24. Logan Hovland (Thompson, Iowa) and Zach Wittenberg (Pella, Iowa) finished 31st and 33rd, respectively, with times of 20:29 and 20:37. Freshman Caleb VanderBaan (Lakewood, Calif.) ran well in his collegiate debut, finishing in 37th place with a time of 20:46. No team scores were kept.
