Red Raiders Drop Games To Dordt

Northwestern College dropped both games of a doubleheader to Dordt tonight in conference play, 5-0 and 6-4. The Red Raiders fall to 5-15 in conference play, 14-25 overall.

The Red Raiders were held in check at the plate in game one by Dordt starter, Brandon Fokkema, who allowed just four singles in improving to 4-2 on the year. Reed Smith, Michael Callahan, Dustin Gaither and Mark Primrose all tallied hits for NWC.

Colin Pennings (1-5) took the loss, giving up five hits and five runs through four innings. Victor Mena pitched two innings of one-hit ball in relief.

Dordt scored all five runs in the third off a Cameron Gingerich single, a two-run single by Colton Van Otterloo and a two-run home run by Zach Fowler.

Northwestern rallied from a 6-0 deficit with four runs in the final two innings and had the tying run at second in the seventh before Defenders pitcher Connor Hopkins recorded the final out to preserve the 6-4 game two win.

Matt Martin hit a two-run double, scoring Smith and A.J. Nitzschke, off Defenders' reliever Cole Samuelson to get within two with one out in the seventh. Gaither followed with a walk, chasing Samuelson from the game, and Casey Guthmiller later followed with a walk as well to load the bases. Dordt then sent in Hopkins, who retired Callahan to end the game.

Chase Davis took the game two loss as the senior gave up three hits and five runs in one inning. Four NW relief pitchers combined to give up seven hits and one run over the final five innings.

Northwestern totaled six hits in game two, led by Martin who went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Done added an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Zach Zylstra picked up the win for Dordt, giving up five hits and two runs in six innings. Taylor Neuroth went 3-for-3 and both Van Otterloo and Chris Schrieber had two hits each.
