Red Raiders Drop Two Against No.18 Bellevue

Northwestern College dropped a doubleheader to No.18 Bellevue this afternoon, 7-6 (12 innings) and 11-4. The Red Raiders fall to 9-8 on the year. 

Tied at six in the bottom of the 12th, Bellevue loaded the bases with one out off Northwestern reliever Nick Stimson (0-1. Following a pitching change to Victor Mena, the Bruins scored the game-winner on a passed ball. 

Northwestern totaled 11 hits, three each by AJ Nitzschke and Matt Martin. Casey Guthmiller went 2-for-5 while Joe Done, Austin Zylstra and Christian Stekl all had one hit each. 

With the score tied at one, Northwestern scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Done had an RBI double and both Guthmiller and Martin had RBI singles. 

Bellevue scored four in the home half of the fourth, all with two outs, to tie the game at five until the Red Raiders went ahead with a run in the top of the eighth. Done reached base after a Bellevue error and was lifted for pinch runner, Mitchell Kresnik, who advanced to third on a groundout hit by Guthmiller. Kresnik scored the go-ahead run following another Bruins error on a ball hit by Zylstra. 

The Bruins sent the game into extra-innings when Lumus Russell hit a solo home run off Zylstra with one out in the ninth. 

Raphael DeHoyos picked up the no-decision, giving up eight hits and five runs in seven innings. The junior struck out seven. Zach Rosson pitched a scoreless eighth and Zylstra allowed three hits and one run in two innings. 

Martin totaled three hits, including a two-run home run, in the Red Raiders 11-4, game-two loss. Nitzsche (1/3, 2 runs), Dustin Gaither (1/3) and Guthmiller (1/3, RBI) had the other hits. 

Tanner Ortlund (1-2) took the loss, giving up 11 hits and 11 runs in 5.2 innings. 

Bruins starter Reid Feeley (3-0) earned the win, striking out 14 in six innings.

Northwestern will play the Bruins on Saturday, March 18 in another doubleheader.
