Red Raiders Open 2017 Season This Weekend

Game Time...Northwestern College (0-0) will make its season debut this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against LSU-Alexandria (7-1) in Joplin, Mo. The games will be played at Joplin High School on both days. Friday's DH will begin at 1:00pm while Saturday's DH will start at noon.

LSUA Generals: Head Coach: Steven Adams Jr. (1st year)

The Generals are off to an impressive 7-1 start to the 2017 season, earning a three game sweep of Stillman, a DH sweep of Loyola, and a 2-1 series victor over Mobile.

LSUA has five players over 0.400 this season, paced by Taylor Faulk at 0.444. Faulk also leads the team with ten RBI. Blake Garrett (0.417), Logan Constantine (0.409), Trace Oliva (0.407), and Trey Caswell (0.400) are all north of 0.400. Caswell has scored a team best eight runs while Oliva has a team high three doubles and Constantine has the team's only home run and is 7-7 in stolen bases. The Generals carry a team average of 0.325.

Kael Jones leads the staff with a 0.00 ERA in 8.2 innings. He has 15 strikeouts in two starts and has a 1-0 record. Cole Feazell has also made two starts. He has a 5.79 ERA in 9.1 innings with 14 strikeouts. Kale Parks and Blake Garrett each have a save for LSUA this season. Their pitching staff currently has a 3.80 ERA in eight games.

Northwestern College: Head Coach: Brian Wede (11th year)

Wede begins his 11th season as the Red Raiders head coach and returns four offensive starters and eight pitchers from a 2016 team that finished 11-9 in the GPAC, 23-27 overall. Wede, Northwestern's all-time winningest baseball coach, owns a .590 win percentage and has 299 wins during his tenure. 

Raphael DeHoyos returns to the pitching staff after earning Second Team All-GPAC honors last season. DeHoyos was 6-4 with a 5.03 ERA in his sophomore campaign. Colin Pennings also returns to the pitching staff after a 5-4 season with a 5.40 ERA. Pennings earned All-GPAC honorable mention honors. Austin Zylstra also earned honorable mention honors after his freshman season in the bullpen. Also returning to the mound this season will be senior Isaac Horigan. Horigan went 8-2 in his last full season as a Red Raider and earned Second Team All-GPAC honors that season.

The Red Raiders added Victor Mena (La Sierra Univ., Calif.) to the bullpen and will look to Zylstra, Chase Davis, Colton Patterson, Nick Stimson, and Joseph Done to provide quality innings in relief.

Offensively, Michael Callahan and Reed Smith both return after honorable mention sophomore seasons. Callahan hit 0.310 with seven doubles and five home runs while Smith his 0.315 with 31 runs scored and eight doubles. Christian Stekl and Casey Guthmiller also return to the lineup this season. Stekl hit 0.301 with four home runs in 2016 while Guthmiller is a career 0.292 hitter in 114 games.

Internally, Northwestern will turn to AJ Nitzschke, Collin McBride, Mitchell Kresnik, Austin Zylstra and redshirt Dustin Gaither for increased roles in 2017. Northwestern has also added some exciting players to watch for the upcoming season including First Team All-Conference junior college transfers David Rowley (College of the Siskyous, Calif.) and Joseph Done (Skagit Valley College, Wash.). Juco transfer Matthew Martin (New Mexico Junior College) also brings an impressive resume after being named the New Mexico state player of the year as a senior in high school.

Freshmen Mark Primrose (INF), Alec Rickabaugh (P), Zach Rosson (C/P), and Colton Harold (OF/P) will also provide Northwestern with some quality depth in their first collegiate season.
