Red Raiders Season Ends With Loss At Midland

Northwestern College lost to Midland 13-8 in a second elimination game played today in the Midland Bracket of the 2016 GPAC Baseball Championship in Fremont, Neb. The loss ends the season for the Red Raiders with a 23-27 overall record. 

Fresh off 5-2 win over Dakota Wesleyan in the first elimination game of the day, Northwestern matched up against top-seed and GPAC regular season champion Midland in the nightcap.

The Warriors grabbed a quick 5-0 lead after two innings, using a solo home run by Dylan Steyer and a three-run shot by Brandon Metoyer. Northwestern put its first runs on the board in the fourth, getting an RBI single by Zach Cortese, who later scored after two errors by Midland.

Midland added to its three-run lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs off three hits and a Red Raider error. Cole Gray hit a two-run double and Anthony Virgen hit a sacrifice fly. 

Northwestern first baseman Michael Callahan hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to five, 8-3. After Austin Zylstra shut down Midland in the home half of the sixth, Northwestern stormed back with a five-run seventh innings to tie the game at eight. Grant Lang belted a solo home run to start the scoring and Reed Smith followed with an RBI single to make it 8-5. A two-run single by Sean Geelan, followed by an RBI single by Casey Guthmiller, scoring Geelan, tied the game at eight.

Midland, however, answered with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away. Metoyer recorded an RBI single and Zach Belanger added a two-run single with two outs.

Zylstra (0-3) took the loss, giving up four hits and three runs in 1.1 innings. Northwestern totaled 16 hits, led by both Lang (3-6, 1 RBI) and Callahan (3-5, RBI). Christian Hamett, Cortese and Guthmiller all had two hits.

Gray led Midland with four hits and Metoyer went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBIs. Josh Rolls picked up the win, giving up two hits in 1/3 inning.

Fernando Gutierrez pitched Northwestern to a 5-2 win in the first elimination game against Dakota Wesleyan. The senior righthander was masterful and efficient once again, giving up five hits and two runs, one earned, in improving to 4-4 on the year. It was the fourth complete game of the year for Gutierrez.

Northwestern scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Cortese led off with a walk off losing pitcher Alex McGuigan (0-2) and advanced to third after a walk to Christian Stekl and a hit by pitch to Callahan. Reed Smith followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Cortese, and Geeland then hit an RBI groundout, scoring Stekl. Guthmiller recorded the only hit of the inning, a double that plated pinch runner Mitchell Kresnik.

Colin Sandbulte put Northwestern in front with a solo home run in the first inning.

This marks the final game for the seven Red Raider seniors; Zach Cortese, Fernando Gutierrez, Sean Geelan, Christian Hamett, Caleb Linn, Colin Sandbulte and Grant Stivers.
