Raiders Face Chargers Today

#20 Northwestern (31-9, 10-4) hosts Briar Cliff (15-26, 7-7) today in a GPAC doubleheader starting at 1:00pm. The Red Raiders will honor their nine seniors between games today.

Scouting Briar Cliff:

The Chargers are 4-6 in their last ten games and are currently on a four game losing streak. They are hitting 0.282 as a team this season and have scored 178 runs in 41 games (4.34 runs per game). Matt Boswell and Gary Davis lead the team with a 0.343 average this season. Joshua Penrod (0.300) has scored 22 runs while Jake Erichsen (0.307) leads the team with ten doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBI. Matt Flechtner (0.283) has a team high ten stolen bases for the Chargers, who are 47-61 as a team in stolen bases.

On the mound, the Raiders will likely see Gary Davis (3-5, 3.53 ERA) and Dylan Hannah (2-4, 7.03 ERA) today. Davis and Hannah are second and third on the team with eight and seven starts a piece. Adam Alexander (4-0, 3.32 ERA), Jon Muller (0-0, 4.86 ERA), Kyle Rommel (2-1, 3 saves, 4.97 ERA), and Jaime Adams (0-2, 3 saves, 8.50 ERA) are the Charger's top relief arms, each making 10+ appearances this season.

Scouting Northwestern:

The Red Raiders are 8-2 in their last ten games and have scored 265 runs in 40 games (6.63 runs per game). The Raiders have a team batting average of 0.316 this season and are led by Skyler Wheeler in average (0.382), hits (52), doubles (15), and RBI (44). Cody Groskreutz is second on the team with a 0.366 average, 35 RBI, and 11 doubles but leads the team with 41 runs scored (tied with Micah Linn--0.297), and triples (8). Mitch Peschon (0.345) has a team best nine home runs and 17 stolen bases. Tony Schultz (0.354), Erik Widener (0.326), and Davis Bloemendaal (0.311) are other Raiders above 0.300. 

On the mound, Northwestern will start Matt Piocos (7-2, 2.77 ERA) and Isaac Horigan (5-1, 2-62 ERA) today. Piocos and Horigan lead the Raiders in innings pitched with 52 and 48 respectively. Ryan Brasser (4-1, 2.42 ERA) and Tyler Stuerman (3-1, 2.76 ERA) round out the Raider starters while Josh Turner (5-0, 6 saves, 3.35 ERA) and Alec Forbes (1-4, 3 saves, 4.82 ERA) are the top options out of the bullpen for NWC. Chase Davis is 2-0 in his last two starts (10.2 innings) with a 2.86 ERA. 

Between games Northwestern will honor their nine seniors; Brett Rolls, Davis Bloemendaal, Erik Widener, Nikko Melonas, Cody Groskreutz, Micah Linn, Matt Piocos, Tyler Stuerman, and Ryan Brasser. 

Over the course of the last four seasons, this class has had a 118-70 record. They are currently seven wins away from being the winningest class in Northwestern history with seven remaining regular season games. These seniors have been a part of the 2011 GPAC Regular Season Championship, 2013 GPAC Regular Season Championship, and the 2013 GPAC Tournament Championship. Behind their strong play and leadership, this year’s team is currently ranked #20 in the NAIA and is 31-9 overall and looking to challenge the school record for wins in a season at 37, done in 2007 (37-18) and 2010 (37-20).

Brett Rolls#1: Brett Rolls. Brett is from Granada Hills, California and is the son of Darrin and Carrie Rolls. Brett is a sports management major and plans to get into coaching after college. During his career, Rolls has played in 120 games and started 18. He has scored 94 runs and stolen 29 bases primarily as the team’s courtesy runner. He is currently top 30 all time in runs scored.

#5: Davis Bloemendaal. Davis is from Orange City, Iowa and is the son of Mark and Lori Bloemendaal. Davis is a Biology/Health Professions major and plans to take a year off to work then plans to attend med. school. Davis BloemendaalDuring his career as a four year starter in the outfield and catcher positions, Bloemendaal has hit 0.315. He has made 176 career starts. He is currently 9th in career hits, 13th in doubles, 6th in triples, and 8th in RBI. He has been a two time All-GPAC selection earning honorable mention in 2011 and first team OF in 2013. Bloemendaal, the starting QB on the football team, also was named the Vander Stoep award winner which takes into consideration attitude and sportsmanship on and off the playing field and comparative contribution made to the success of the team. Bloemendaal also has a career ERA of 0.00.

Erik Widener#7: Erik Widener: Erik is from Spanaway, Washington and comes from Grays Harbor College. He is the son of Jack and Marcia. A Sports Management major, Erik plans to get into coaching after college. During his career, Widener has hit 0.280 in 86 starts. Widener was named the 2013 GPAC Gold Glove winner at second base and is having a better year in the field this year.

#9: Nikko Melonas: Nikko is from Orem, Utah and is the son of John and Irene. Nikko is a Math major and will report to The Basic School after being commissioned as a United States Marine Corps Officer following graduation this May. Nikko MelonasNikko has made 62 starts and is a career 0.296 hitter with 24 stolen bases.

#11: Cody Groskreutz: Cody is from Apple Valley, Minnesota and is the son of Jon and Kauline Groskreutz, who now reside in Orange City. Groskreutz is an exercise science major and plans to work at EZ-liner following college. Groskreutz has hit 0.333 as a four year starter for the Red Raiders in 181 starts. He is 5th all-time in runs, 6th in hits, 12th in doubles, 3rd in triples, 6th in RBI, and  2nd in walks. He earned All-GPAC honors in 2011 and 2013 and was the GPAC Gold Glove winner at first base last season. In 2013, he was also named a NAIA Champion of Character and won Northwestern’s George Dunlop Sportsmanship Award. Cody GroskreutzThe winner of the award must be an active participant in athletics at Northwestern.  Athletic ability is not the determining factor.  To win, one must represent the finest in character and sportsmanship, not only on the athletic field, but off the field, in classroom activities and his everyday life and relationship with others.  He must do his best at all times, regardless of the job or position he is asked to hold or play.  He must be known as one who never quits, working always for the good of his team and his school.  His character and sportsmanship must be an inspiration to those around him, doing what is right in the sight of God and man.

Micah Linn#13: Micah Linn: Micah is from Downey, California and is the son of Tom and Amber Linn. Micah is a Business Management major and plans to attend grad. School after Northwestern. Linn has started 89 games in the OF for Northwestern, hitting 0.301 in 299 at bats. He has scored 74 runs and stolen 20 bases. Linn was a 2013 All-GPAC honorable mention.

#21: Matt Piocos: Matt is from Downey, California and is the son of Matt and Veronica Piocos. Piocos, a Business Management major plans to join the fire academy in Colorado following graduation. Matt PiocosDuring his career, Piocos has made 14 starts and 33 overall pitching appearances. He currently has an 11-5 record and one save. Munch was a 2013 All-GPAC honorable mention as a relief pitcher. Piocos is also the only pitcher to earn a hit in their senior at bat.

#34: Tyler Stuerman: Tyler is from Hinton, Iowa and is the son of Pete and Mardell Stuerman. Tyler is a business administration and accounting major and plans to work toward becoming a CPA after graduation. During his career, Stuerman has made 31 starts and 47 appearances. He is 17-9 in his career with four saves and a 3.12 ERA. Tyler StuermanHe is currently 8th in career ERA, 9th in wins, and 10th in innings pitched. Tyler was the 2013 GPAC Pitcher of the Year, 1st Team All-GPAC Pitcher, and was also a 2013 NAIA All-American honorable mention.

#35: Ryan Brasser: Ryan is from Paullina, Iowa and is the son of Kevin and Karen Brasser and is married to Christine. Ryan is a Business Education major and has accepted a position to teach Business and coach JV girls basketball at West Lyon High School next year. Ryan has made 32 starts in his career and has 39 career appearances. Brasser has a 21-8 overall record with one save and a 3.44 ERA. Brasser is 3rd in career wins, 9th in inningsRyan Brasser pitched, and 12th in career ERA. Brasser has been a three-time All-GPAC pitcher twice earning honorable mention accolades and earning Second Team honors as a junior in 2013. Brasser will also be a two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete.
