Northwestern's baseball team heads to Minneapolis to kick off the 2008 season in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Twins.  Northwestern will face Mt. Mercy in a doubleheader starting at 9:45 p.m.  The Red Raiders are coming off of a 37-18 season in which they won the NAIA Region III Championship and advanced to the Plains Super Regional for the first time in school history.  Returning starters from last years team are: Codie Zeutenhorst, Jake Jansen, Austin Malone, Joe Heitritter, Grant Wall, Matt Gray, Curtis Bomgaars, Mihai Burlea, and Joe Grady.

Northwestern was the GPAC coaches pick to win the league this year and will face a very difficult non-conference schedule before the start of the conference season.  The Red Raiders are currently receiving votes to be ranked.

Last season Mt. Mercy finished second in the tough MCC and advanced to the NAIA Region VII Tournament Championship before falling to St. Ambrose.  They had an overall record of 26-20 last season and went 18-8 in conference play.  This season, Mt. Mercy is 2-2, splitting two doubleheaders with Huston-Tillotson of Austin, Texas.

Following Saturday's contest Northwestern will hit the road again next Saturday to play Avila University in Kansas City, Mo.  Avila is currently ranked #23 in the NAIA.  Last season Avila also reached a NAIA Regional Championship game, in Region V.
