Michael Shields (Kearney, Nebraska) has signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Northwestern College beginning in the fall of 2008. Shields, the son of Mike and Tracy, is a 6’7” first baseman for the Kearney American Legion Senior 'A' team . In his career, Shields has hit .376 with 68 doubles, and 152 rbi in 474 at bats. Last season, Shields' team went 44-14 and made it to the state tournament semi-finals before being eliminated. In 2006, Shields set the single season rbi record with 76 rbi in 56 games en route to being named an All-Star. Shields will also participate in golf while at Northwestern.
Shields is a member of the National Honor Society and also was named an Academic All-State student. He plans on majoring in business at Northwestern. "I couldn't be more pleased that Mike has chosen Northwestern. He is a player/student who is committed to exactly what Northwestern stands for. He will no doubt help us on the field immediately but he will also grow into a great leader on our campus," said head coach Brian Wede. "Mike is the type of first baseman every coach looks for; a guy who hits for average with gap to gap power and a monster target at first base. His 6-7 frame will no doubt make our infielders love throwing to him."
