Ryan Brasser (Paullina, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Northwestern College next year.
Brasser, the son of Kevin and Karen, is a 6-6 left handed pitcher from South O'Brien High School in Paullina, Iowa. Brasser is a four year starter for the Wolverines and coach Justin Mohning. He has a career 13-16 record in 187.2 innings with a 3.47 ERA. His 222 career strikeouts are a school record. In his junior season, Brasser went 4-5, 2.01 ERA for the 7-18 Wolverines and had 104 strikeouts (a single season South O'Brien record), while walking only 25 batters and allowing 43 hits in 62.2 innings pitched. In 2009, he was named to the Northwest Iowa Review 2nd Team as a pitcher, 2nd Team All-District Utility, and 1st Team All-Conference pitcher. As a sophomore, Brasser earned 2nd Team All-District pitcher honors and 2nd Team All-Conference pitcher honors; he was also named a All-Conference honorable mention as a freshman.
Brasser also excels in the classroom, ranking first in his class of 65, and carrying a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. Brasser was a War Eagle Conference Meritorious Achievement Award winner in 2008 and 2009, a Herbert Hoover UnCommon Student Finalist in 2009, a three year member of the National Honor Society, and he is an Iowa Academy of Science-Seminar State Champion. He also is serving as the class body President at South O'Brien for 2009-2010 and was named this school year's Homecoming King. He plans to major in Math, Chemistry, or Physics while at Northwestern.
"Ryan will be a great addition to our pitching staff. He is a tall left hander that throws four pitches for strikes and has a competitive attitude on the mound," said head coach Brian Wede. "As a South O'Brien graduate, I know what a positive influence Ryan's parents, Kevin and Karen, have been to hundreds of students, including myself, and I feel honored that someone who has been raised in their household would consider our program as a worthy program. Ryan will no doubt have an immediate impact for us on the field, but I am most excited to watch Ryan's development as a man of faith and his leadership away from the diamond grow."
