Jun 9, 2009

Senior Trevor Kuiper and juniors Curtis Bomgaars and Matt Gray earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors for their efforts in the class room. The honor was Kuiper's second, and he became the first Northwestern baseball player to be named a two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete.

Kuiper, a recent graduate who will be attending the University of Iowa's Dentistry program for graduate school, went 5-6 this season and carried a 4.92 ERA in 11 starts. He led the team with 64 innings pitched and 49 strike outs en route to being named All-GPAC Honorable Mention.

Bomgaars, a junior third baseman, hit .339 for the year including five home-runs. He was second on the team with 28 RBI and also scored 25 runs. Bomgaars was named All-GPAC Honorable Mention at third base.

Gray, a junior outfielder, hit .333 on the year and scored 24 runs while driving in 12. Gray also finished with five stolen bases, five doubles, and a triple in 2009.

To be named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete, a player must maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA and carry junior or senior academic standing. This is the third consecutive season Northwestern has had a player named to the NAIA Scholar Athlete team.
