Apr 28, 2008

Northwestern baseball, which recently clinched the GPAC regular season championship, has signed a couple of Iowa natives for the fall of 2008. Eddie Pantzlaff, a pitcher from Bettendorf, and Josh Maitlen, a first baseman from Creston, have both signed letters of intent to compete for Northwestern during the 2008-09 school year.

Eddie Pantzlaff (Bettendorf, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Northwestern College beginning in the fall of 2008.

Pantzlaff, the son of Craig and Michele, is a 6'2" pitcher for Bettendorf H.S.  In his career, Pantzlaff is 9-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 70.2 innings.  He has struck out 61 batters and walked 26.  The right handed pitcher will earn his third letter this summer for coach Jay Fitzgerald.  Last season Bettendorf made it to the Sub-State Final before being eliminated.

Pantzlaff has earned three academic letters at Bettendorf and will major in Biology-Health professions (Pre-Med) at Northwestern.

“Eddie will come to Northwestern with a high chance to compete right away on the mound and he is exactly what Northwestern is looking for.  He comes from a competitive high school program and has produced nicely on the field for them," said head coach Brian Wede.  "I am happy Eddie has chosen Northwestern because I believe we can give him the education he needs to study medicine and because he can help us continue to field successful baseball teams."

Josh Maitlen (Creston, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Northwestern College beginning in the fall of 2008.

Maitlen, the son of Steve and Sue, is a 6'2" first baseman for Creston H.S.  In his career, Maitlen is a .313 hitter in 141 at bats.  Last season, Creston advanced to the state tournament in class 3A and finished 19-13 overall.  Maitlen has earned one baseball letter at Creston, four tennis letters, two football letters, and was a 2nd Team all-district football player.

Maitlen is a member of the National Honor Society, has earned an academic letter, numerous Excellence in Academic Awards for athletics, and has been a member of the honor roll.  He will study Business at Northwestern.

“Josh has a great frame and projects to be a middle of the order hitter as he learns to make adjustments from high school to college," said head coach Brian Wede.  "He comes with a significant amount of success in a number of different sports; including being a starter on a state qualifying baseball team last summer in class 3A.  I am excited to get him on campus to watch him progress over the next four years."
