The Red Raiders fell to 10th-ranked Wichita State (NCAA D-I), 10-1, in nine innings. NWC falls to 1-2 overall on the season.
The Shockers scored three runs in the first off of Red Raider starter, Mihai Burlea (1-1). NWC scored their only run in the third inning when Mike Zoellner led off with a single, advance to second off a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Austin Malone. Wichita State got the run back in the bottom of the third inning off Burlea and then broke the game open in the fifth with four runs and an 8-1 lead. The Shockers scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring.
Offensively, NWC pounded out nine hits, three each by Jake Jansen and Mike Zoellner. Burlea picked up his first loss of the season going three innings. He gave up four hits, five earned runs and struck out three. Four other Red Raiders hurlers were able to get some work in relief of Burlea.
NWC will next play this Saturday against Peru State in Peru, Neb.
