The Northwestern baseball team is teaming with the Northwestern IJM Chapter to raise awareness of the biblical issue of justice, through the Northwestern-IJM Pursuit of Justice Tournament. The four team tournament will be held September 8th, in Orange City with the first game starting at 10:00 a.m. The four teams participating in the tournament are: Dordt College, Iowa Lakes Community College, Mount Marty College, and Northwestern College.
IJM (International Justice Mission) is an international Christian human rights organization located in Washington D.C. IJM documents and monitors conditions of abuse and oppression, mobilizes intervention on behalf of victims, and educates the church and the public about the the issue of biblical justice. IJM advocates get involved in cases of bonded child slavery, forced prostitution and sex trafficking, illegal detention, land seizure, and government misconduct.
"We are excited to use baseball as a vehicle to bring justice issues around the world to light. I am excited that the four teams involved will be joining us in this mission and hope all the players and coaches involved have a great experience," head baseball coach Brian Wede.
There will be a suggested admission donation of one dollar; pizza, brats, and refreshments will be available, along with a limited concession stand. All of the proceeds will be donated to IJM, hoping to follow God's command in Isaiah 1:17, "“seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan and plead for the widow.”
Northwestern's Director of Service Learning, Marlon Haverdink, hopes for a large turnout, “We are very excited that the baseball team has partnered with our campus chapter to help raise support and awareness for IJM. We hope the community comes out to enjoy a great day of baseball and to support the work of IJM."
